It’s been 50 years since India opened its doors
KOZHIKODE: On the 50th year of the exile of Dalai Lama and the Tibetan community, the Indo-Tibetan Friendship Society is organising a ‘Thank You India’ campaign for giving refuge and protecting their rights to live. During the Tibetan uprising of 1959 against the Chinese invasion, Dalai Lama fled to India and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru gave him political asylum. He was residing in India since with thousands of his followers. The event would also bring the members of Tibetan community in the state together.
three-day programme in connection with the campaign would begin here on Sunday. The Indo-Tibetan Friendship Society state president Dr Anoop Anandayogi said it aimed at strengthening the ties of Tibetans with people of India and also to enlighten those who are ignorant about the Tibetan issue and exile of the Lama. “In Kerala, the awareness about the Tibetan issue is much lesser than the northern states,” he told DC.
Exhibitions unveiling the culture and history of Tibet and the life of the Tibetan spiritual leader, seminars on the invasion by the Chinese, a photo exhibition, solutions for the crisis, sessions on Tibetan medicines and screening of Tibetan movies are part of the campaign. A free Tibetan medical camp also would be organised in connection with the programme. Dr M.K. Muneer MLA would inaugurate a seminar on health in the three-day festival on Sunday. Writer T.P. Rajeevan, Swami Nadachaithanya Yogi and green activist Prof Shobeendran are among the speakers.
