Prague, March 10 (CTK) – Town halls across the Czech Republic, including in Prague and Plzen, west Bohemia, hoisted the Tibetan flags yesterday to remember the 55th anniversary of the anti-Chinese uprising in Tibet in which at least 80,000 Tibetans died.
“The campaign is not only backed by towns and schools. The flags have also appeared on companies, houses, churches, libraries and many other places,” Edita Kleckerova, head of the organising Lungta NGO, said.
“Besides, a number of public events are being held across the Czech Republic,” Kleckerova said.
Dozens of people gathered outside the Chinese embassy in Prague late in the afternoon. Organisers from the Czech branch of Amnesty International and participants wanted to point out that Tibetan culture was being suppressed and destroyed due to Chinese reprisals.
They brought along with them balloons in Tibetan colours with the text “Free Tibet” and personal messages to Chinese representatives.
All the balloons were simultaneously released to the air.
Information on www.tibinfo.cz says the Tibetan flag was hoisted by 599 municipalities, towns, districts and regions as well as 99 schools, including Prague and Brno, the second largest town in the Czech Republic.
The protest was also joined by University of Pardubice in east Bohemia and Masaryk University in Brno.
