Narita, Japan, 8 May 2016
After a comfortable flight from Delhi, His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived at Narita International Airport around lunchtime today. He was received at the door of the plane by a representative from the Indian Embassy in Tokyo and Japanese officials. Tibetan Representative Lungtok was on hand to welcome him once he had passed through immigration procedures. As he stepped out into the arrival hall His Holiness laughed to see several old Japanese friends who were exuberant in their greetings.
On the pavement just outside the airport about 150 Tibetans and people from the Himalayan region were gathered to pay their respects with katas, flowers and a welcome banner. A group of spellbound children presented His Holiness the traditional ‘chema changpu’ offering. He spoke to several of them, patting their cheeks affectionately. A couple of young mothers requested names for their small babies. His Holiness smiled and waved as he climbed into his car for the short drive to his hotel. Tomorrow he will travel to Osaka where he will teach Shantideva’s ‘Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life’ over four days.
