Why I came here!

Motomi Sugita

My name is Motomi Sugita.

My friends call me Gen, it’s my nickname.  In Japan, I have some jobs, mainly my job is as a painter, but its not enough to earn a living so I have another job.  Before coming to India, I worked in a guest house as a cleaner for eight months.  The purpose of doing this was to study English by having conversations with the guests.

Those days were very precious for me, I had so many experiences.  Always I had a struggle with English conversation, finding it a problem, because I was the only poor English speaker on the staff. Sometimes I cried and then they all supported me and I feel gratitude towards them.  I made good friendships with many foreigners and it was very nice for me.

Also, I am thankful for having the opportunity to talk to someone in English because Japan is a very small island and there are not many chances to meet foreigners easily.

Now, the skills that I gained while working in the guesthouse are helping me now I am abroad – although I do not yet have enough skill.

In summer, the staff at the guest house in Japan gathered and went to fireworks festivals.  In Japan, fireworks festivals are a kind of tradition.  So many are held every year, especially in summertime.  It is very beautiful, kind of nostalgic and has a kind of sentimentality.

Now, the Japanese economy is getting worse.  Also, the atmosphere is not good.  Almost all people seem to feel tiredness and I want to find a good solution to this.  I think that looking at, and learning about, many kinds of cultures, and getting to know different peoples’ ideas and thinking, are necessary for the improvement of Japan.  That’s why I came here!
