TWA Elects New Leadership

April 19, 2021;

The Tibetan Women’s Association (TWA) has elected their 16th Executive team who will lead the organisation for the three year period 2021 – 2024. The three day general body meeting took place in Dharamshala on April 14 – 16.

The new Executive Team is headed by their new President Tenzin Dolma from Bylakuppe; Tsering Dolma is the new Vice-President and Kalsang Dolma the General Secretary. Other team members are Dolma Tsering, Tamdin Dolma, Lhamo Choezom and Namgyal Dolkar.

The new leadership’s priority will be to implement the nine-point resolution adopted by the General Body Meeting. The resolution includes working on the legacy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama; putting more effort and initiative into securing the release of the 11th Panchen Lama who is detained by Chinese government; finding more ways to preserve the Tibetan language and culture; environmental preservation and encouraging Tibetans to have more children to offset the decreasing Tibetan population in exile.

Their resolution expressed strong support for the Middle Way Approach for the Tibetan movement; this is the official stance of the Central Tibetan Administration, also known as the Tibetan Government-in-Exile. In view of the deteriorating human rights conditions of Tibetans living in Tibet under the Chinese regime, the meeting raised voices against the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and promised to campaign against it.

TWA is the largest and only women’s association in the exile Tibetan community, with 16,000 members and 57 chapters across the world. The meeting was attended by representatives from 18 chapters; others were unable to participate due to the Covid19 pandemic surge in India.

TWA’s Executive office is based in Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, which is also the seat of the Tibetan exile government and home to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
