His Holiness the Dalai Lama gave a four-day teaching on Tsongkhapa’s “Great Stages of the Path” at the request of a group of Mongolians. Around 4,000 people from 48 countries, including 700 people from the Mongolian group attended the teaching, which was at the Tsuglagkhang Temple in Dharamshala.
His Holiness began the teachings by invoking the concept of the Perfection Vehicle and the Vehicle of the Secret Mantra. “You need to have right motivation to take this initiation of the Avalokiteshvara Empowerment. You should not have a motivation of such things as wanting to have wealth, success and longevity in this life, because that is the wrong motivation,” said His Holiness. He also said that one should be motivated to attain the omniscient state of Buddhahood.
His Holiness offered prayers to His Eminence the Ninth Khalkha Jestun Dhampa Dorjee Chang Jampel Namdrol Choekyi Gyaltsen, the spiritual head of the Jonang tradition of the Tibetan Buddhism and the spiritual head of Mongolia, who passed away on March 1, 2012 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Towards the end of the session His Holiness gave the reading transmission of a prayer that he has written for the swift return of Kalka Jetsun Dhampa Rinpoche. He remarked that he had known the previous Jetsun Dhampa since he was ten years old. His Holiness also mentioned that he had encouraged him to take his next birth in Mongolia.
On the last day of the teachings, His Holiness conferred the Avalokiteshvara Empowerment. He explained that the Empowerment he was about to give related to Avalokiteshvara in the context of Highest Yoga Tantra.
His Holiness concluded the teaching by expressing his hope of meeting the Mongolians next year in Mongolia.
